Brothers Richard and Donald Rheem founded the Rheem Manufacturing Company in 1925, in California. Originally, Rheem was a manufacturer of steel drums, and over the years, they made other types of products. In the 1950s they began manufacturing HVAC products. In 1960, they acquired Ruud, and used its Kalamazoo plant to make their entire air conditioning units and heating products.
Rheem is currently the only manufacturer in the world that produces heating, cooling, water heating, pool & spa heating and commercial refrigeration products, and it is the largest manufacturer of water heating products in North America.
Edwin Ruud was a Norwegian mechanical engineer who immigrated to America. He developed the first automatic water heater in 1889, when hot running water was almost unknown. It was another sixty years before the company began to develop heating and air-cooling appliances in the 1950s. In 1960, the Rheem Manufacturing company purchased Ruud and its product line.
All Ruud heating, cooling, and water heater products meet and exceed rigorous industry standards for quality and reliability. From raw material delivery to finished product assembly, each phase in the manufacturing process is effectively overseen to ensure the highest quality in water heater manufacturing.
